Sitting around the campfire at Kali Kamp I recognize almost no one. Sure we spent the day turning pedals together, but all the faces were new to me and now I’m at a loss for who’s who. So I’ve reverted to the age old technique of identifying everyone by asking “hey, what bike are you riding?” This not only makes it easy to identify who they are and how they ride, but supplies hours, upon hours, of mutually entertaining conversation.  “How much travel does that bad boy have?” “How wide of bars are you running?” “Did you try the same...

Some kids are into BMX bikes, photography and girls, in no particular order. Some kids are much more nerdy. Some are into reading The Hobbit, joining the debate team and building model planes. Some are more into lighting off firecrackers, getting muddy and breaking curfew.  When you meet Kali founder Brad Waldron, in his baggy shorts, well-worn Kali t-shirt and dirty Five Ten kicks, you just assume he’s less nerd and more scalawag.  Then when you see the model plane sitting on his desk, you feel a little confused. It seems a bit out of place amongst all the helmets, tools and bike parts.  “One...

Brian McCulloch is the longest running member of the Elevate KHS Pro Cycling Team and by all accounts as sweet as he is strong.  "You won’t meet people in the cycling world any kinder, nor more gregariously friendly, than Brian McCulloch," said Ted King, former ProTour cyclist and two time winner of Dirty Kanza.  "He’s always asking how you’re doing, how you've been, what’s new, and so forth with a sincere interest to know truly how you’re doing. Plus, he’s obviously got a motor."  As the 2019 season winds down, we took the opportunity to catch up with McCulloch to find out...

Writing a wrapup story for an event like Kali Kamp is always a bit of a puzzler. With 20-plus people all camping at the beach for a couple of nights and shuttling into the hills to ride the world renowned singletrack of Santa Cruz, everyone’s experience ends up being slightly different.  But I think these two quotes overheard just moments after a particularly rowdy section of trail can give you a pretty good indication. “That was amazing,” said one guest.  Followed closely by the thoughts of a second rider. “I think I’m going to puke,” he muttered.  And there it...

Some people might call it a junket.  Others might call it a boondoggle. Still others might call it a trek, or an outing, or an expedition, or a jaunt, or a journey, or an off-site meeting, or a field trip, or maybe even a vision quest. And still others would probably just call it for what it really is, an opportunity to get paid to ride your bike. Well, call it whatever you like, but we call it Kali Kamp. That’s right, it’s that time of year again where we, the Kali staff, pack our tents, grease our chains, pump...
